Lorna Morton
Lorna Morton has over 20 years of experience teaching violin, viola, and piano. Born in London to Irish parents, she spent much of her life in London, Essex, and Buckinghamshire, while maintaining strong ties to Ireland through regular visits each summer. In 2024, she relocated permanently to Ireland and has been a valued member of the teaching team at Mayo School of Music since then. In addition to her work with Mayo School of Music, Lorna also teaches violin, viola, and piano in Galway.
Lorna has a particular interest in the Suzuki approach to music education. While studying at university, she completed her thesis on the Suzuki Method and continues to incorporate many of its principles into her teaching. Working alongside Suzuki-trained teachers in Galway, she places a strong emphasis on developing excellent technique from the outset, creating a solid foundation for musical growth and enjoyment.
Classically trained, Lorna's experience is rooted primarily in classical music and traditional teaching methods, although she also has a keen appreciation for Irish traditional music.
Lorna holds a Bachelor of Science in Music from City University London, which included violin studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Following her studies, she worked as a full-time classroom teacher for seven years while maintaining an active performing career with string quartets and chamber orchestras. After the birth of her son, she focused primarily on private one-to-one tuition in violin, viola, and piano, alongside occasional classroom music teaching.
As a performer, Lorna has extensive experience playing with string quartets, chamber ensembles, and orchestras. She has toured throughout Europe with orchestras and has also performed as a backing violinist with the tribute production The Carpenters Story. She continues to undertake professional performances in the UK and Ireland.
Teaching remains Lorna's greatest passion, and she takes particular pleasure in helping students of all ages and abilities develop their musical skills and confidence. She enjoys being part of the Mayo School of Music team and values the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated group of teachers while supporting a diverse community of students, from young beginners to adult learners.
