MAYO SCHOOL OF MUSIC YOUTH CHOIR
Youth Choir Win at Navan Choral Festival April 2009
Congratulations to the Mayo School of Music Youth Choir, who claimed first Prize in the “Contemporary Youth & Post Primary Choir” Competition, at the Navan Choral Festival last weekend. 49 members of the choir traveled to Navan to compete at the Festival.
The choir also received a second place in the Under 18 Youth Choir Competition where they were narrowly beaten by one point by Wesley College Dublin. As the choir received such a high mark they were awarded a certificate of distinction for this competition.
Their last competition was for Youth Choir of the Year where they were placed third.
This has been a fantastic result for the choir who has only been in existence for 3 years.
The accompanists for the choir were Avril Forde McGreal and Rachel Armstrong. Musical Director is Finola Higgins Cosgrove.

Youth Choir Represent Mayo at the Volvo Ocean Race:
Main Stage at the Galway Volvo Ocean Race was the place to be on Wednesday 27th
May when the Mayo School of Music Youth Choir sang some of their favorite pieces to a
large appreciative crowd. The Choir was asked to represent Mayo at the festival by the
Mayo County Development Board. This same stage was later used by the Hot House Flowers,
The Coronas, The Stunning and Aslan to mention a few. Below a picture of the choir on stage
at the festival.
About the Choir:
The choir’s first performance of the year took place at the Basilica in Knock on Saturday
22nd September for the First National Grandparents Pilgrimage.
The Mayo School of Music Youth Choir is in existence since September 2006. It was
formed as a direct result of the opening of the Mayo School of Music in Kiltimagh in May
2006.
There are currently 57 girls in the Youth Choir from the ages of 10 to 18 years. Each
and every member went through an audition before getting a place in the choir.
Members come from all over Mayo including Kiltimagh, Swinford, Castlebar and
Charlestown. They rehearse every week under the direction of Finola Higgins Cosgrove
and are accompanied by Avril Forde McGreal.
In November 2006, they were honored to be asked to perform with the Cill Aodain
Choral Society in their hugely successful show “Bygone Days” . The Youth Choir
gave a wonderful, unforgettable performance and for the finale they had the opportunity
to sing on stage with Dana, Eileen Ivers, Sean Ruane and Michael English.
